Is AI Taking Over Education?

Imagine being able to get the answer to almost any problem you encounter. Stuck on a pesky math problem? Need ideas to write a song? Or simply seeking relationship advice? Well, Artificial Intelligence can do it all. You have probably heard of the new AI tool: ChatGPT.

This new piece of technology can assist its users with almost anything. From simple homework help to preparing for a job interview, ChatGPT can answer almost any question thrown at it. This is an interesting feat that can easily improve all our lives. Who needs to write an essay when you can simply generate it with AI? Many students are beginning to use this tool for similar reasons. But how does ChatGPT really influence our education?

Technology is constantly improving everyday. Not too long ago, people had to wait hours on the phone to reach customer service. Now, more companies have implemented the use of chatbots, which have allowed customers to quickly speak with customer support representatives the moment they enter the website. The growing speed of convenience in our society is impressive but also quite alarming.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a machine to carry out tasks using human intelligence. From writing essays, driving cars, managing healthcare, and providing personalized learning, AI is capable of performing almost any tasks humans can do. In fact, they can do it faster and more efficiently than humans. For example, processing data takes hours or days for humans to do manually, but with AI, it could take a couple seconds. Even though AI can perform many tasks, they can only imitate human behavior instead of creating their own. Humans created AI from their own experiences, knowledge, and trials. Without our own discoveries, failures, and knowledge, we could not have created such a significant tool.

Although Artificial Intelligence can assist students with personalized learning and growth, students should not fully depend on AI to complete their work or for answers. AI should not be the sole source of a student's work. Many children are using ChatGPT as a tool to write their essays or complete the homework, but they do not gain the skills, work ethic, and full feeling of achievement from doing this. In today's technologically dominated society, it might be inevitable that a student comes across this tool and is tempted to use it for convenience. Educators and parents should be aware of this easily accessible technology and adjust accordingly. It might be difficult to fully keep students away from this, but acknowledging that AI is such a prevalent tool is important.

When you fully immerse yourself in learning, you reap more benefits. Dependence on technology for school work may overshadow this important step in growing and learning. If you simply generate an essay without immersing yourself in a personal journey of revision, originality, and accomplishments, how will you truly discover your potential to write? How will you demonstrate your originality? It is through trial and error that you can explore your own ideas when you write your own essay or solve that math problem on your own. Humans have accomplished so much even before the introduction of AI, and they are still capable of accomplishing much more in the future without it. AI can be a helpful tool, but do not let it take over your education and personal journey of growth. It is there to assist you, but don't rely on it for your education. Many schools are now banning ChatGPT because it isn't considered original work. Education is meant to allow your authenticity to bloom, not the work of a machine that imitates other ideas.

If you are tempted to use AI such as ChatGPT, take into considerations the consequences you might face. However, don't forget the benefits AI can bring to our society in advanced ways. Even if AI does not fit into a classroom setting, it can be valuable in other fields such as medicine or security. You could possibly create a new form of AI from the unique experiences and ideas that you obtain from your original journey of education.
